Snagged this from (you guessed it) the local fair trade organic coffee shop, Just Us. I truly do love their coffee, and although celebrating New Years fair-trade style sounds like a real blast, it's a Papyrus hotspot.
Here's to a Papyrus-free oh-ten? Not likely, but it'll be interesting to see if there's any repercussions of some of the recent mainstream Papyrus use like Avatar. I sense we're coming to some sort of peak...Peak Papyrus?
Danny sent in this link to a Gizmodo article on terrorost attacks and at first I didn't see the Papyrus. But The first couple comments were also referring to it, so I had another glance and there it was! I think we may have to file this in the very thin acceptable use folder (seems to fit the Egypt motif, no?) What do you think?
Well, Michael caught this on Letterman last night. Inspired by Avatar? A joke?
Speaking of Avatar's use of Papyrus, I wonder if it will be subject to enough criticsm to get the attention of some guilty designers, perhaps slowing the growth of it's usage? Or will it open the floodgates of acceptance leading us into the Decade of Papyrus? Interesting indeed, these times we're in.
Back when I really didn't know how big this movie was going to be we got a bunch of submissions and tweets, in particular a dude named David pointed out its Papyrus, showing how he made a variation of the font to match Avatar's in just a few minutes: We've seen it at McDonalds and in memes. Now Websites are talking, this guy's pretty pissed, folks on the IMDB forums are debating, and people are still tweeting, and now Gizmodo is writing about it. So what's the word? Custom Papyrus? As I've mentioned I think it is a customized Papyrus, why they would do that I don't know. Remarkable coincidence? Why does it matter? Is Papyrus just another font, like Arial or Times, and a less classy Helvetica? Is that ok? Maybe I can try to sorta feel for all these unknowing Papyrus users. I started thinking, and then I got scared...
In a rather epic episode of American Dad (Season 5 Episode 9: Rapture's Delight) some kind of religious thing happens and Stan misses it and is left behind on Earth. As you can see, "7 years later" Earth has gone to shit and the story continues on an apocalyptic Earth. I've never been a huge fan of American Dad, but this one's worth watching, to witness the Papyrus for yourself at least. Can't tell if it's someone trying to be funny of if they legitimately thought this font was great.
We've posted about Avatar's Papyrus before, and there's been plenty of talk about it. And McDonalds too. But this pic with Ronald is too funny to pass up. There's something so settling about this image, actually. Like a sort of corporate comfort, like everything will be ok and I can eat some McDonalds.
Matt sends us in some Papyrus shots from Australia, Cairns and it's nearby towns, actually, are these two:
And this one is from a fabric store. Thanks Matt. Well folks, it does exist down under too.
Ah, this one is from a couple of typography pros. The irony they found was that section on Papyrus scrolls was in, not papyrus, but Lucida Sans. Hmm...
Jenna pointed us to this website for the Moss Rock Festival which she described as a Papyrus explosion. She got that right. She also made a point that it was a cool festival, and I'm sure it was. I like moss and rocks and the earth, but that website is looking pretty rough.
Now here's a post from someone who's passionate about Papyrus. Somehow it has touched him. This is what results when you've been pushed too far: I Fucking Hate the Papyrus Font.
Here's a shot from Frisky Dingo on Adult Swim from Tom (good eye). We've seen this before on Tim and Eric and think it's probably on purpose, so that's funny.
Found this one in the holiday candy mountain at the local SuperStore and emailed it in. Highly organic looking...misleading? Original recipe? Of course it is, why would you change it, they're delicious.
Papyrus! Yeah, our friend Jonathan sent us this website for pentaho (something technical, he's a programmer). Actually looks pretty nice, and Web 2.0ish, making that Papyrus really look out of place.
How about that. Even before Avatar it was Stargate. Arc of Truth is a made for DVD movie with a $7,000,000 budget according to Wikipedia, no mention of the Papyrus though.
Ok, here we have a bit of a tragedy. This animated Flash-clock is seriously pretty amazing, you should check it out for the transitions. But of course, the developer had to choose Papyrus. I think the shape of Papyrus' numbers are suiting, which may be why it was picked? Anyway, I think Georgia would look pretty damn hot. You?
Yes, there's no place like home alright, unless you've gotta see this every time you walk in. Thanks again to nathan for grabbing this shot at the Hobby Lobby.
Nathan send in this "indiscernible" safety poster and I couldn't agree more with his description. But in fact, Papyrus isn't the worst culprit in this case. I mean the whole thing is just wacky and distracting. That scripty font used for the details of each safety step really is pretty impossible to read. Hopefully no one is hurt due to this masterpiece.
