Neverwhere

John sent us this book telling us it was a fun book to read and is compared to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. But he quotes
The inside of the book is ugly, too. It appears to be printed on a bubble jet printer that was running low on toner. Sometimes, periods are followed by double spaces.
It definitely looks like one of those books.

  1. The first edition of Neil Gaiman's story collection Smoke and Mirrors likewise uses Papyrus for the cover -- and for the story headings, and the entire table of contents!

It should be noted that these date from 1996 and 1997, which was somewhat before Papyrus became so faddish.

  2. Well...we all know that addage about judging a book by it's cover. That is true here! It came out in the '90s and Papyrus is a very '90s font. But like everything else by Neil Gaiman, still a good read!

  3. What's wrong with double spaces after a period?

Also, is it safe to say that anything from year 2000 and onwards that Papyrus should be considered overused?

  4. It's a very good book, and was a good TV series too. From the early-mid nineties, it was before the Papyrus fad (I'm still trying to work out what's so wrong with people liking a font. I like it too). Still not as bad as the love affair with Comic Sans MS. ;)

And yes, what's wrong with having two spaces after a full stop? That's word processing/typing language protocol as far as I know. I was always taught that anyway. Single spaces after words and commas, two after full stops, question marks and exclamation marks.

  5. You're right, we were always taught two spaces after a period in school, although I have no idea why. It's normal for official typesetting to only be a single space. Take a look through books, newspapers, and magazines and you'll see. There's no good reason to have two spaces - it takes longer and takes up more room. In addition, on the web, HTML doesn't even support two spaces ... you can't put in two spaces in a row in HTML unless you enter the special code for a space. Typing 2 spaces in HTML just automatically reverts to 1.

  9. The way you write and how relatable it is captivates me. It was my reading addiction that kept me turning the pages until the end! I have always been curious about how other people see the world, so I enjoyed seeing things from a different perspective after taking the color blind test online . There is a rich tapestry of colors beyond our own perception, and it is humbling to realize that. It is inspiring to see how diverse and beautiful human vision can be.
